The Explanation

Level three uses a series of 4 movements which are repeated 4 times to bring the arms back to their original starting point.

The first movement is a
Double Forward (both arms Forwards). This is followed by a Mirror Reflection which reverses the position of the arms. The next movement is a Backward-Forward where the left arm moves backward and the right arm moves forward. The final movement is a Double Transquarter where both arms do a Transquarter movement.

The movement instructions at the bottom of each picture are the movements taken to get to that position from the previous position. When you read the instructions they tell you how to get to that position from the position you were just at.

The idea is that if you are copying the pictures, as your eyes move to the next picture along, your arms stay where they are. Then you looking at the next picture along you see what movements are required to get your arms from the previous picture to the present picture.

Your eyes lead your mind. Then your mind leads your body.

Ideally you learn the algorithm and the arm position designations so that you no longer need the pictures. Knowing where you are in the algorithm and where you body is in space, your mind then uses the algorithm to determine where you are going. You then move your arms from where they are to where you want them to be.

About the dance of shiva and me

When I first read about Andrey Lappa's "Dance of Shiva" I was intrigued by the notion of spiral movements of the arms used to generate the flow of energy and bestow the practitioner with special powers.

I have yet to develop special powers but the Dance of Shiva has helped me to become smarter, improve my mind-body coordination and help me see connections. Perhaps those in and of themselves are "special powers," special enough for me to want to share this art.
