Terminology-Terms of Movement

When referring to movements of the arms there are seven basic movements, eight if you include a Zero movement. A movement is change from one position to another position.

The Forwards movement (F) can be from:
A to B, B to C, C to D, D to A or
1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 1.

The Backwards (B) movement can be any of the following:
A to D, D to C, C to B, B to A or
1 to 4, 4 to 3, 3 to 2, 2 to 1.

The Transquarter Movement (T) is a shortcut from one position to a non -adjacent position in the same plane i.e.
A to C, B to D, C to A, D to B or
1 to 3, 2 to 4, 3 to 1, 4 to 2

The Change Plane Movement (C) takes the arm from one plane to the corresponding point in the other plane i.e.
A to 1, B to 2, C to 3, D to 4 or
1 to A, 2 to B, 3 to C, 4 to D.

The Change Forward Movement (CF) takes the arm from one plane to the next point forwards in the other plane:
A to 2, B to 3, C to 4, D to 1 or
1 to B, 2 to C, 3 to D, 4 to A

The Change Backwards Movement (and the Change Forwards Movement for that matter) is like a combination of a Change and a Backwards movement in one. The Change Backwards Movements (CB) are as follows:
A to 4, B to 1, C to 2, D to 3 or
1 to D, 2 to A, 3 to B, D to C.

Finally the Change Transquarter Movements (CT) give us the means of moving from a point in one plane to the non-adjacent point in the other plane:
A to 3, B to 4, C to 1, D to 2 or
1 to C, 2 to D, 3 to A, 4 to B

About the dance of shiva and me

When I first read about Andrey Lappa's "Dance of Shiva" I was intrigued by the notion of spiral movements of the arms used to generate the flow of energy and bestow the practitioner with special powers.

I have yet to develop special powers but the Dance of Shiva has helped me to become smarter, improve my mind-body coordination and help me see connections. Perhaps those in and of themselves are "special powers," special enough for me to want to share this art.
